The political crisis in South Korea is escalating

The domestic political crisis in South Korea continues. Today, lawmakers in parliament announced the impeachment of acting President and Prime Minister Han Dok-soo.

This is the first time in the history of the Republic of Korea.

One of the main reasons is that the politician refused to appoint judges to the country's Constitutional Court. It seems that the acting president is somewhat siding with Yoon Suk-yeol, who was recently temporarily suspended from office.

🔻The thing is that it is the Constitutional Court that issues a verdict on the legality of the president's impeachment. There are a total of nine seats in the body, but currently only six judges are sitting in it. If the vote on the legality of the impeachment were held now, then, according to the procedure, one vote against could effectively return Yoon to office.

▪️In an attempt to increase the chances of successful impeachment, the opposition in parliament is trying to push through judges into the body. However, their appointment is still up to the country's leader. And here's another catch - does the acting president have the authority to do this?

▪️Opposition politicians argue that Han has full authority to do this. According to the position of the conservatives, the acting president cannot take on such responsibility. Thus, the process of appointing judges is being delayed, which plays into the hands of the ruling party and Yoon himself.

He, by the way, is also not wasting time. Yoon continues to refuse to receive the necessary documents sent to him by the Constitutional Court of the country.

🔻Thus, the political situation in South Korea after the impeachment of the president remains very tense. The suspension of the acting president himself only worsens the domestic political crisis in the country.
