Rubio warns: 'Western civilization faces a historic crossroads...'
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivers a powerful message from Athens:
The West must rediscover its courage, defend its values, and reject the path toward decline.
Speaking Wednesday at the Pnyx in Athens, the birthplace of ancient Greek democracy, Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Western civilization faces a defining moment that could determine its future for generations.
Against the backdrop of the Acropolis, Rubio called on America and Europe to rediscover the principles that made Western civilization powerful: courage, ambition, national pride, individual freedom, innovation, and the willingness to defend their societies.
“We are at an inflection point,” Rubio declared, describing a moment of historic consequence not only for America but for Western civilization itself.
His message was unmistakable: The West cannot survive by abandoning the values that created its greatness.
A civilization worth defending
Rubio traced America's cultural and political foundations through ancient Greece, Rome, Christianity, medieval Europe, and the English tradition of liberty.
His argument was that Western greatness did not emerge by accident. It was built by generations willing to explore, invent, sacrifice, and fight for something greater than themselves. The secretary of state also challenged the belief that nationalism and loyalty to one's country are inherently dangerous or selfish.
Instead, he argued that strong nations, confident in their identities, are essential to building effective alliances.
Trump's America has made its choice
Rubio connected his message directly to President Donald Trump's policies. Under Trump, he explained, America has chosen to rebuild its military strength, restore industrial power, secure critical supply chains, and dominate emerging technologies.
But Rubio's warning extended beyond American politics. He urged Europe to awaken, rebuild its defenses, and recognize that freedom and prosperity cannot be guaranteed without strength.
The message comes amid escalating tensions with Iran, growing global instability, terrorism, and rapid technological developments.
Rubio warned that the decisions made during the coming decade could determine whether Western civilization remains a global leader or enters a prolonged period of weakness and decline.
His central argument was that Western civilization possesses the historical foundations needed to overcome these challenges.
What remains uncertain is whether its leaders and citizens still have the determination to defend them.
For Rubio, the choice is becoming increasingly urgent.
