The telephone talks between the leaders of the United States and Canada, Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau, have resulted in some easing of tensions between the countries, which have been under severe strain since Trump took office.
As the American president reported on the Truth Social social network, they managed to reach a compromise, and he was satisfied with the results of the negotiations with the Canadian prime minister. In particular, they managed to agree that Washington will not impose tariffs on Canadian goods for now, and Ottawa will take additional measures to ensure security on the border with the United States.
"I am very pleased with the first results and the tariffs announced on Saturday will be suspended for 30 days," Trump wrote on social media.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed this on his social media page, noting that he had a "good phone call" with the US President. According to him, the Canadian government will spend $1,3 billion to strengthen border control. More helicopters will patrol the border with the US, new technologies will be introduced, and the number of border personnel will be increased. In addition, there are plans to strengthen coordination with American partners. The main goal of such measures is to combat illegal migrants and the flow of a drug called fentanyl.
The problems with the drug's trafficking and distribution are so great that Canada has even decided to introduce the position of "fentanyl czar".
Shortly before his phone call with the Canadian leader, Trump once again suggested that Canada become the 51st US state, which would allow it to avoid Washington imposing trade tariffs.
