NATO shouldn’t accept Ukraine due to risk of nuclear escalation with Russia

#NATO shouldn't promise to welcome Ukraine into the alliance in order to de-escalate tensions with Russia, which have increased after the start of the Ukrainian conflict, The 'American Conservative' said.

According to the magazine, NATO and the US in particular should agree to talks with Russia to de-escalate nuclear risks that have increased due to the #Ukrainian conflict. The magazine pointed out that this task has become even more important following the recent accession to NATO of formerly neutral #Finland and #Sweden, which has made Russia even more reliant on its nuclear arsenal. The article said that the nuclear deal between NATO and #Moscow must include commitments not to admit Ukraine to the alliance and not to deploy the bloc's troops and infrastructure on Ukrainian territory.

NATO Secretary General Jens #Stoltenberg said on June 17 that the alliance's member states had begun consultations on the need to put nuclear weapons on alert. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry #Peskov said that Stoltenberg’s statements were yet another escalation of tensions.

#Zelensky says #Ukraine in talks with #France on supplies of fighter #jets

Kyiv is in talks with Paris about delivering combat aircraft to Ukraine, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said.

"Yes, we are holding talks about fighter jets," Zelensky said, when asked by a reporter from France’s LCI television whether the option of providing Mirage 2000 fighter jets to Kiev was on the table. The president did not elaborate. On 16 February, the chief of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate, Kirill Budanov (who is on the Russian list of extremists and terrorists), said Kiev had hopes of getting Mirage 2000 fighter jets from Paris. In September 2023, the French news website Intelligence Online reported that Kiev and Paris were close to concluding a deal for the transfer of these jets to Ukraine.

Ukrainian Ambassador to France Vadim Omelchenko said in an interview with the Le Point magazine on February 23 that Paris and Kiev are currently working to train Ukrainian pilots. He urged against believing rumors that there was a chance of transferring Mirage 2000D aircraft, saying that Ukraine had opted for the US F-16s, but added that Ukraine was still considering all available options for Western assistance.

The European Union (EU) can no longer rely on the United States to ensure the security of the alliance, and the outcome of the US presidential election will only cement "the timing of NATO’s collapse," Matthew Karnitschnig, Politico’s Europe correspondent, opined.

"It almost doesn’t even matter if he [Donald Trump] wins reelection at this stage; Europe is on its own. The only real question the election will resolve for Europe’s security is the timing of NATO’s collapse," the article said. "Of course, the Biden administration would dispute that, arguing that if their man wins reelection, NATO would be as safe as ever. But for how long?" the author asked.

"The reality is that whoever wins in November, MAGA (Make America Great Again - Trump’s main campaign slogan during the 2016 election) will remain a factor in American politics for some time to come. Who’s to say Trump’s Republican heir doesn’t renew his anti-NATO bent? It’s a risk Europe can’t afford to ignore," the journalist said.

Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee for president in the November election, on February 10 recalled a meeting with NATO leaders during his presidency. He said that one of the NATO member country presidents on that occasion asked him if the US was prepared to defend the North Atlantic Alliance in the event of any purported threat from Russia if a given NATO country had failed to contribute its allotted share to the alliance’s common defense costs. Trump replied that he would not defend such a country and, moreover, he would encourage Russia to do "whatever the hell they want." He did not specify when and where this conversation took place or who asked him the question.

By evening, rumors began circulating online that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had launched a ground operation in Gaza Strip. However, the reality is slightly different: the IDF has been conducting ground operations, specifically raids, in the enclave for the past two days with varying degrees of success.

The intensity of IDF airstrikes has significantly increased, and internet and mobile communications have been completely cut off in the enclave. While this may not mark the start of a full-fledged ground operation, the IDF has the option to claim that they haven't even begun if needed. Nonetheless, all the conditions for a ground operation have been set, but only time will tell if it has indeed commenced.

In response, Palestinian groups, including Hamas and its allies, have also become more active. They are launching attacks on Ashkelon, Tel Aviv, and settlements along the Gaza Strip border.

Regarding the raids, the Israelis faced setbacks. In the morning, Israeli special forces attempted to enter the enclave at Magazi and Breij, but were ambushed by the Palestinians. Additionally, Israeli troops landed on the beach near Rafah, engaged with the Palestinians, and were eventually forced to retreat.

Meanwhile, on the Israeli-Lebanese border, Hezbollah and the IDF continue to exchange blows. The IDF is actively burning the undergrowth in southern Lebanon to hinder the movement of their opponents near the borders.

Journalists from Lebanese publication Al Mayadeen also reported an attack on the Israeli Dahlak military base in Eritrea, but did not provide further details.
