Violent Riots spread across Europe as France remains epicenter
Violent unrest continues to spread across parts of Europe, with France remaining the main center of sustained rioting while serious clashes have also erupted in Belgium and localized disturbances have been reported elsewhere.
France has now seen weeks of unrest involving student protests, school blockades and repeated confrontations with riot police. Hundreds of schools have been closed or disrupted, while demonstrations in Paris, Nantes, Rennes, Marseille, Lyon and other cities have repeatedly deteriorated into arson, barricades, attacks on public property and clashes with police.
Thousands of rioters have been arrested since the unrest began, many of them minors. Schools, vehicles and street infrastructure have been damaged, while police have repeatedly used tear gas and other crowd-control measures.
The unrest has now crossed into neighboring Belgium, particularly Liège, where demonstrations have turned violent. Police have faced arson, vandalism and street clashes, with large numbers of arrests and the use of tear gas and water cannon. Brussels has also seen demonstrations, although so far on a considerably smaller scale.
In Spain, Barcelona has experienced clashes connected to political and housing protests, although the violence remains more localized than in France.
Meanwhile, London, Amsterdam and several German cities have seen tense demonstrations surrounding the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas massacre and the war in Gaza. Arrests have been made and police have deployed heavily, but these incidents have not yet reached the scale of the sustained French unrest.
The situation across Europe is therefore not one single coordinated uprising. France is facing the most extensive and persistent disorder, Belgium is seeing a significant spillover, while other countries are dealing with separate protest movements that have occasionally turned violent.
