In a podcast interview with The New York Times, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that a Chinese assault on Taiwan could lead Russia to launch attacks on European countries to prevent them from intervening.
Rutte emphasized that for this reason, NATO countries must act jointly and strengthen their defense capabilities to deter Russian aggression.
About two weeks ago, NATO members agreed to increase their defense budgets to 5% of GDP by 2035.
Since Donald Trump began his second term, the Pentagon has shifted its strategic focus to the Indo-Pacific in response to rising Chinese aggression.
According to the head of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, China’s military provocations toward Taiwan have increased by 300% compared to last year.
Back in April, a senior Pentagon official described China’s military buildup in nuclear weapons, conventional arms, cyber capabilities, and space as “unprecedented.”
