Israel's Historic War against Hezbollah

During the "Iron Swords" War, the IDF launched an unprecedented offensive against the terrorist group Hezbollah, significantly altering the dynamics in the Middle East.

This campaign was characterized by meticulous planning, exceptional operational execution, and the strategic use of intelligence, yielding historic outcomes

One of the IDF's key advantages in Lebanon was its extensive understanding of Hezbollah, built over many years. Military sources emphasize, "Knowledge is a weapon." Careful planning and preparation for subsequent phases ensured optimal intelligence utilization during operations. This was evident as Hezbollah found itself incapacitated after a series of targeted strikes, unable to implement its plans to invade the Galilee, inflict harm on the Israeli home front, or cause significant casualties.

A critical blow to Hezbollah was the dismantling of its command structure, including the elimination of Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, following a decade-long intelligence effort by the IDF and Mossad. This operation resulted in the deaths of Nasrallah and 13 senior leaders, causing a major disruption within Hezbollah's hierarchy. Additionally, the elite "Radwan" unit suffered devastating losses, with over 700 operatives killed and its capacity to execute planned offensives severely diminished.

Operation "Northern Arrows" marked the pinnacle of IDF operations in Lebanon. It began with the "Gadid Tamrim" offensive, aimed at neutralizing Hezbollah’s missile and rocket capabilities. This operation involved the deployment of over 1,900 munitions in a single day, targeting advanced weaponry and launch systems, effectively crippling Hezbollah's strategic firepower.

Beyond direct military action, the IDF sought to undermine Hezbollah’s operational capabilities by disrupting its key supply routes, particularly those transporting weapons from Syria to Lebanon. The destruction of tunneling infrastructure near the border also mitigated a significant strategic threat to Israel.

The outcomes of the campaign are stark:

  • 3,800 terrorists were killed, including Nasrallah, with 2,762 casualties during ground operations and 44 during the ceasefire.
  • 70% of Hezbollah's strategic air defense systems were destroyed.
  • Approximately 75% of short-range launch sites were eradicated.
  • 70% of the terrorist infrastructure, including weapons depots and command centers, was dismantled, leading to widespread destruction in southern Lebanon.
  • The conflict resulted in 1.6 million refugees and displaced persons in Lebanon, creating substantial social strain on Hezbollah.

Israel's security landscape in the northern sector has shifted, necessitating a proactive and aggressive stance to maintain these gains.

The IDF is prepared for future challenges, recognizing that Hezbollah will not relent easily, yet the current campaign has clarified Israel's dominant position. Hezbollah is now weakened, fragmented, and under continuous pursuit, while the IDF possesses significant intelligence and air superiority in the region.

It appears that Israel may have previously overestimated Hezbollah's capabilities and, conversely, has demonstrated overwhelming military and intelligence strength in the Middle East.

Regarding the situation in Syria: Following the fragmentation of the Syrian army and the collapse of the Assad regime, the IDF swiftly targeted Syrian military capabilities. Utilizing intelligence resources from Military Intelligence and the Northern Command, the IDF has effectively dismantled much of Syria's strategic military capacity.

The process of establishing a security buffer zone was executed rapidly, with only 36 hours passing from decision to action. The IDF currently controls five areas in Syria amid ongoing instability, and efforts are underway to reinforce the border with a trench and embankment to deter infiltration.
