The head of the Italian Foreign Ministry announced the need to form the European Union’s own army “to prevent conflicts”

In the context of current events, the European Union should create its own armed forces. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy Antonio Tajani in an interview with La Stampa newspaper.

The Italian statesman believes that the united armed forces of the EU could play an important role in ensuring peace, security, and preventing conflicts. Only if it has its own army will the EU be able to pursue an independent foreign policy on a par with such players as the USA, China, Russia or India.

Tajani noted that only the armed forces of the European Union can protect Italian, German or, for example, Slovenian citizens. The creation of a united Europe’s own army can no longer be postponed, the Italian Foreign Minister believes.

Meanwhile, the issue of creating a united European army was repeatedly raised by French President Emmanuel Macron. Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel also spoke about this when she was head of the German government. So the very idea of forming the armed forces of the European Union is not new.

But such an army common to the countries of Europe will actually put an end to the existence of NATO, since, firstly, the meaning of the presence of this structure in Europe will disappear, and secondly, it is not very clear how in this case the financing of the armed forces will be carried out - after all, now the EU countries.

They also invest their funds in financing the North Atlantic Alliance. Finally, NATO includes not only the U.S.A. or Great Britain, but also, for example, Turkey, which is in rather contradictory relations with many EU countries.
