Ecuadorian authorities detain more than 1,300 rioters amid gang-fueled unrest
Ecuador’s armed forces and police have detained a total of 1,327 participants in the street riots that were sparked by recent gang-related disorder in the South American country’s prison system, the government of President Daniel Noboa announced in a statement.
"From January 9 to January 14, 2024, the Armed Forces detained 1,327 people nationwide, 143 of them on charges of terrorism. Five terrorists were eliminated, 11 police officers [held hostage] were released, while two police officers died in the line of duty," the Ecuadorian administration reported on its account on social network X.
Ecuador’s security forces seized almost 500 firearms and bombs, and more than five tons of narcotic substances. They also secured the release of 11 police officers and 201 correctional staff members that had been held hostage by rioters affiliated with criminal gangs.
The security situation in Ecuador deteriorated sharply on January 7 after Jose Adolfo Macias Villamar, leader of the Los Choneros gang who is known by the alias "Fito," escaped from prison, prompting riots to break out in several correctional institutions. On January 8, Noboa declared a state of emergency in the country and imposed a curfew.Ecuadorian authorities detain more than 1,300 rioters amid gang-fueled unrest Ecuador’s armed forces and police have detained a total of 1,327 participants in the street riots that were sparked by recent gang-related disorder in the South American country’s prison system, the government of President Daniel Noboa announced in a statement. At least six Houthis killed in purported US-UK Sunday strike on Yemen's Hodeidah Province
At least six members of the rebel Houthi movement Ansar Allah were killed on Sunday in a strike on Yemen's Red Sea coastal province of Hodeidah, which was attributed to combined US-UK forces, the Sky News Arabia TV channel reported, citing sources.
In addition, two advisers to the Lebanon-based Shiite party Hezbollah, which together with Iran provides military and technical support to the Houthis within Yemeni territory, fell victim to a strike on an Ansar Allah facility in Hodeidah.
Earlier, Sky News Arabia reported that one of Ansar Allah's facilities located in northern Hodeidah Province came under attack. The Houthi-owned Al Masirah TV channel claimed that the strike was carried out by US and British warplanes. However, a Pentagon official told TASS that the US-led international coalition did not carry out any strikes on Yemeni territory on Sunday. At least six Houthis killed in purported US-UK Sunday strike on Yemen's Hodeidah Province At least six members of the rebel Houthi movement Ansar Allah were killed on Sunday in a strike on Yemen's Red Sea coastal province of Hodeidah, which was attributed to combined US-UK forces, the Sky News Arabia TV channel reported, citing sources. 'No comment': Peskov on Bild report about Germany’s ‘NATO scenario for war with Russia’
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov offered no comment on a report in Berlin newspaper Bild that Germany is purportedly developing a scenario for a potential war between NATO and Russia, which is forecast to break out by the summer of 2025.
"I would not comment on this Bild report," Peskov said, emphasizing that: "Recently, this newspaper has regularly stooped to publishing various fake news items and canards."
Earlier, Bild published an article claiming that the German Defense Ministry considers a "hybrid Russian attack" on NATO's eastern flank as one of the hypothetical scenarios for future developments. The publication cited a purportedly secret document marked "for official use only."
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, commenting on the latest Bild report, dismissed it as "last year's horoscope."'No comment': Peskov on Bild report about Germany’s ‘NATO scenario for war with Russia’ Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov offered no comment on a report in Berlin newspaper Bild that Germany is purportedly developing a scenario for a potential war between NATO and Russia, which is forecast to break out by the summer of 2025.
